Burger Week Review

Caution may cause drooling.

So in Toronto we recently had Burger Week, which is actually a 5 day event where the last day all the burger joints have vendors at Wychwood Barns for all you can eat sliders for 30$ while burger places all over Toronto serve 5$ burgers from May 29-June 1. Being a lover of food and local food, this was something I surely had to do!

Although I only went to four different burger places I felt the need to inform other foodies about my burger experience, and which places you can put on hold. Also because it’s burger the only thing I will be commenting on is the burger, not the venue, not the service, or anecdotes that happened that day.

The first burger I had came from Gangster Burger located on 607 Queen Street West.

5$ Burger: Beef patty, sauteed kimchi, chipotle mayo, fried egg, and gangster goo (spicy ketchup)

Comment: I’ve always wanted to try a burger with an egg in it because it just sounds soo good and out of the ordinary, so you can tell I was really excited for this burger. But I’m sorry to say I was kinda disappointed with the burger. First bite the burger was really good, with a taste of the meat, and the perfect amount of bread, then after 5 seconds you feel the spice from the chipotle and spicy ketchup which was expected. Second bite you have the egg overtake the meat and more spice. Lets just say that each bite was not like the first and was just being overtaken with spice and the big slices of kimchi and lettuce where you either it all the lettuce or take it off. Each bite was inconsistent where none of the ingredients were working together just over powering each other.

Taste: 5-6/10

5$ Burger: Bison burger with arugula, cured tomato, garlic aioli, and Irish porter cheddar

Comments: This burger jumped out on me just because it was bison meat, something I also wanted to try. Also when I think bison meat I think of juicy and tender meat for some reason. When the burger came to me, it first smelt like garlic bread because of the garlic aioli and a seasoned bun, I was also drooling because of the copious amount of the Irish cheddar and aioli that covered the meat. The first bite was really good, the seasoning was on the meat point complemented the meat very well! Then I went in for the second bite and it was tender. You tasted the arugula, but not it’s bitterness and the cheese and aioli complemented the meat very well. The only problem I would say was that you would get hard pieces of the meat which would kinda ruin your foodgasim. Not sure if it’s common for bison meat but it would be annoying. Overall I would order another bison burger and look forward to tasting the seasoning.

Different: 1.5/5 The only cool thing about the burger was the meat and Irish cheddar

5$ Burger: Ground beef with arugula, horseradish aioli, house-made pickles, and shaven red onion on a house-made potato bun

Comments: Finally a house-made bun! Not many of us really understand the importance of a bun in a burger, and getting a house-made bun was exciting. First impression of the burger was that it was basically a size of a slider, but had great presentation. The first thing I said when I took a bite was that it was fresh, the ingredients were fresh and subtle. The meat itself is actually normal, the bun had a thickness of a biscuit. What made the burger for me was the veggies, and how you can take each one subtly with the tenderness of the ground beef.

Review:

Different: 1/5 The bun was the only thing that was different from a regular burger

Taste: 6.5/10

5$ Burger: One beef and one bacon patty, double cheese, bacon, and homemade bacon dressing

Comments: OK best for last. From the description alone you can tell where this is going. This is what I call an “All American Burger” it has everyone that you would expect in America! You unwrap the burger and theres oil everywhere, your hand, the wrapping, just everywhere. You take a bite and all I could think of was “Wow” tasting oil is imminent, but yet soo good. The dressing was very thick and could’ve been easily mistaken as cheese-whiz. The burger is salty, but it’s something you expect with a bacon patty and bacon on bacon! Just be prepared to struggle after you finish the burger, and I say no physical activity for at least an hour. For 5$ I say it was worth it, but luckily it’s only a deal you can get once a year.

Review:

Different: 3.5/5 only because you expect a burger like this to exist

Taste: 8.9/10 Salt galore, meat galore, cheese galore
